Space to grow food locally, particularly in cities, is at a premium. In this workshop, students will be introduced to a variety of technical skills, including agriculture, computer-aided design, carpentry, electronics, coding, and the Internet of Things, in the context of creating a small vertical garden they can take home. Students will investigate the needs of plants for water, light, and nutrients; design a small raised-bed garden in SketchUp; build an electronic system that monitors soil moisture, humidity, and light, and delivers needed water, using a microcontroller; and shares this data to a smartphone app and webpage.
