Thursdays After School Trimester 2 AND 3, 2021-2022
NOTE: The class spans both trimesters 2 AND 3 to allow for sufficient build time to create a high quality, functional boat as described below.
Meets 24 times on: Dec 2, 9, 16, Jan 6, 13, 20, 27, Feb 3, 10, 17, Mar 3, 10, 17, 24, 31, Apr 7, 14, 28, May 5, 12, 19, 26, Jun 2, 9
This class is for motivated students who are interested in designing and building their own custom 8-foot long mini-boat that they can actually paddle around for nearshore fun. While boat designs will be unique, the boatbuilding process is prescriptive and will be supported with detailed instructions by an experienced boatbuilding instructor. Students will create the side and bottom panels for their custom boat with a single sheet of marine plywood and will join the boat together with a limited amount of additional lumber, adhesives and fastenings. Students will also build a simple functional paddle for a local launch event in late Spring 2022. The great majority of work will be completed with hand tools. Some woodworking experience will be helpful for this class, and students should be strong swimmers. It is very important that students attend almost all of the classes, and that they are willing and able to work mostly independently after seeing a skill demonstration.
